No Complaints.

July 17th, 2010

My Client reminded  me of a valuable life lesson.

What would a world without complaining look like?

I assisted her labor, which began at 5:30p. When I arrived at her house it was 11:00p. She was at the point in her labor that her contractions were 5 – 8 minutes apart and lasting 30 seconds. We turned the lights off, lit 3 candles, turned on soft music, and got into a rhythm and ritual. Birthing Ball, Bath Tub, Slow Chest Breathing, Hee Breathing, and constant drinking of water. Never once did she tell me she hurt, that is was too much, that she couldn’t do it. In fact, the only time she spoke was in between her surges (contractions) and is was words of positivity. From 11:00p until 2:00a she was having 30 – 60 second contractions  3 – 5 minutes apart. Every time a surge came, she closed her eyes and I coached her through her breathing. When the contraction ended she rolled back and found 1 – 3 minutes of complete relaxation. At 2:00a I decided we better head for the hospital as I could tell the contractions were getting longer and shorter apart which made me assume we were heading into late active or early transition labor.  By the time we arrived at the hospital (which had no beds available) we were checked into a triage room (tiny room where patient gets checked not a place typically to have your baby). When the nurse came into check her, she asked my client “Honey where do you think you are at?” my client responded “I have no idea.” The nurse looked at me and I said “I never make any assumptions.” I began to get nervous, thinking, is she going to tell us she is at zero and we have to go home? The nurse responded “You are at 9cm and the head is low, we should have a baby soon.” And that is what we did. While pushing her baby out (in between surges) the doctor told her how amazed he was with her poise and integrity through the labor. She responded, “I told myself I wasn’t going to complain through the whole thing, what would be the point?” 3 more surges and we had a baby at 5:20a.
